Sarah Jane(6)Fraser [1] was born August 18, 1921 in Easton PA, and died March 10, 1998 in Valley Center, California. She married Howard Ogden Wood December 22, 1941 in Hastings-on Hudson, NY, son of Howard Wood and Caryl Hackstaff. He was born June 15, 1921 in New York City, and died December 05, 2001 in Valley Center, CA. Notes for Sarah Jane Fraser: Lived in Pauma Valley, California Grew up sailing the east coast with parents on schooner "Bellatrix". Also lived in large estate "Lovat" in Hastings on Hudson , NY next door to other family members. Remembered having guard s around the place during the depression after Lindburg kidnapping. Never graduated from high school, attended Garrison Forest and Dobbs. Was inspiration for Howard going into greenhouse business. Primarily housewife and mother, but always available when needed a t the business. Largely self-educated. Read constantly and always asked questions. Avid Gardener, she would plant and move and rip out until she was satisfied. Started orchid collection. Became so large and well known that Queen of Belgium came to visit in Grenada. She was very artistic, could draw and expressed it primarily in needlepoint and knitting. Founded "fraternity" group with three other friends, all beer drinkers , ITK "I Tap a Keg". Spent summers in Cedarhurst, Long Island . Family was member of Larchmont Yacht Club. Owned Lightning Class sailboat #17. Attended Yale, graduated December 19, 1942 with Bachelor of Engineering degree. Fraternity member. Navy ROTC. Was part of accelerated program due to WWII. Went into Navy after graduation , commissioned as Ensign, February 18, 1943 , worked at Brooklyn Navy Yard. Was Lieutenant at discharge. Lived in New Haven, CT . Moved to Pepperell, MA. Worked for Nashua Corp. in Nashua, N H, planning production runs for machines. Started greenhouse business in Pepperell, "Woodhaven Greenhouses". Built own greenhouse buildings. Opened retail florist shop in Groton, MA. Specialized in potted plants, poinsettias, chrysanthemums, African violets, dealt extensively with wholesale flower market in Boston . Was a Rotarian, President of group in Groton. Bought summer camp on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH "Thisisit" . Founder of Lightning fleet #332. Sailed with children and travelled over much of New England to regattas. Sold houses in Pepperell and Holderness, bought house in Center Harbor, NH "Caleb's Clearing". Later sold and moved to Pauma Valley, CA. Also owned house on Grenada in West Indies "Three Peaks". Had extensive orchid collection from all over the world. Cruised around the world three times on the "Sagafjord" with extensive side trips. Played golf and tennis until the year he died at age 80 of liver cancer.
